The Archer

2016

My first attempt at making a Japanese influenced moving archer doll. I had many failed attempts to get this fella to work. The doll was shelved after some attempts at using wooden cams to control his movements failed. At the time I did not have a great amount of time or a well-stocked workshop, so solutions came slowly.

I finally opted to replace the traditional cams used for this sort of Karakuri with an Arduino controlled array of servos, carefully hidden in the display case.

It works, and even impressed a famous Karakuri Ningyo doll expert named Tamaya Shobei the 9th. He was impressed with my attention to detail and problem solving.

In the future I plan to make a more traditional version of this kind of archer automata. As they say, stay tuned!
